Popular former Mayor of Derby, John Ahern, has been picked by Liberal Democrat members to stand for Derwent at the council elections in May.

John Ahern represented the neighbouring ward of Chaddesden as a Labour Councillor between 2002 and 2008. John left Labour to join the Lib Dems last year because he was fed up with Gordon Brown's failure to deliver for local people and because he wanted to support Lib Dem Lucy Care's bid to be Derby North's next MP.

John Ahern said "Derwent needs a councillor who will work all year round for local people. I've listened to what concerns local people and my top priorities will be getting more things for young people to do and action to tackle anti-social behaviour."

Hilary Jones leader of Derby City Council said "John Ahern was a Mayor and Councillor respected by people from all parties, he will make a great addition to the Lib Dem team on the council."

John Ahern was also Labour Councillor for Spondon between 1996 and 2002.
